The 2014 Governor General's Literary Awards Shortlists Announced

The Canada Council for the Arts recently announced the shortlists for the 2014 Governor General's Literary Awards, Canada's national literary awards. Each year the GG's honour the best in Canadian writing, in both English and French, in the categories of Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Drama, Children's Text and Children's Illustration, as well as Translation.

Victoria Book Prize 2014 Finalists Announced

The Victoria Book Prize society announced the 2014 nominations for the City of Victoria Bulter Book Prize and the Bolen Books Children's Book Prize on September 17th. Two independent juries selected the finalists, looking for the best books by Greater Victoria authors from the past year.

Many of our publishers and their authors were selected as finalists for both awards this year. Congratulations to:

Biblioasis & ECW Press Both Celebrate 2014 Giller Prize Longlist Nominees

The Scotiabank Giller Prize celebrated its 21st year by announcing its longlist at McGill University, alma mater of the Prize's founder Jack Rabinovitch, on September 16th. Over 160 titles were submitted from over 60 publishers nationwide and this year's jury of Shauna Singh Baldwin, Justin Cartwright, and Francine Prose, narrowed it down to a longlist of 12 titles.

Of those 12 titles, a quarter come from our very own member publishers. Congratulations to Biblioasis and ECW Press on their nominations.

Theytus Books Authors Honoured at the Ontario Premier’s Awards

The Ontario Premier's Awards for Excellence in the Arts were handed out on September 16th at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. The Awards were created by the Government of Ontario in 2006 and are given out annually to individual artists as well as arts organizations that make significant contributions to the arts in Ontario. The Ontario Arts Council selects a jury to evaluate the candidates and select a winner each year.

2014 Vancouver Book Award Finalists Announced

The City of Vancouver recently announced the finalists for the 2014 Vancouver Book Awards. Titles selected came from a wide variety of genres but each displayed a unique view of the city of Vancouver. This is the twenty-sixth year the award will be given out to a title that highlights Vancouver as a character, or showcases its culture and/or history.

We know the way in which our nation’s freshest, edgiest creative voices go from their page to your bookshelves has changed a lot over the last decade. Your beloved indie bookstore may have closed, you may be in a remote location without bricks and mortar options, and it’s tough to sort through everything on offer online to find the best books for you by homegrown authors.

LPG asked readers how they found out about and got their hands on new, local poetry. The response included a keen interest in a dedicated online resource for Canadian literature. 

Wolsak & Wynn Publishers

Wolsak and Wynn is an eccentric literary press based in the heart of Hamilton, Ontario. With steel mills on one side of them, the Niagara Escarpment on the other, and Toronto somewhere off in the distance, they spend their time producing brilliant, highly individual, and sometimes provocative books. With over thirty years of publishing behind them, they’ve won a number of awards for their books, from the Governor General’s Award for Poetry to the Pigskin Peter’s Award for Nominally Narrative Canadian Cartooning.

Véhicule Press

Montreal, QC

Since 1973 Véhicule Press has published award-winning poetry, fiction, essays, translations, and social history. In 1981, Véhicule began Signal Editions, a poetry series which has since published 72 titles, one third of them by first-time authors. In late summer 2003, Véhicule added a new imprint, Esplanade Books, a fiction series.

Turnstone Press

Founded in a Winnipeg pub in 1976, Turnstone Press has become one of the most highly regarded book publishers in western Canada, publishing not only poetry but also fiction, literary criticism, and non-fiction. In 1998 Turnstone Press launched Ravenstone Books, an imprint dedicated to mysteries, thrillers, and noir fiction. They publish only Canadian authors or landed immigrants, striving to publish a significant number of new writers, in a variety of genres, as well as to publish 50 per cent Manitoba writers and/or books with Manitoba content.

Thistledown Press

Saskatoon, SK

Thistledown Press is a literary book publisher located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Established in 1975, it has built its reputation on its commitment to quality and its willingness to embrace books as cultural artifacts in both content and form.
Thistledown publishes poetry and fiction for adults and young adults to a national and international audience. Although Thistledown’s policy has been to serve primarily as a platform for the literary arts of Saskatchewan, its list represents all regions of Canada.
