Canadian author Yann Martel has been sending Stephen Harper books every two weeks for over two years, books that Mr. Martel feels 'expands stillness,' that will maybe help Mr. Harper appreciate the importance of the arts just a little more.
Since Mr. Martel is now out on a book tour of his own, he has asked other Canadian writers to help him out. This week Don McKay, Member of the Order of Canada, has chosen the 'classic' Canadian piece of writing that is The Grey Islands (Brick Books). He says in his letter to Mr. Harper, 'There is such economy in the language, and such a sure musical sense in Steffler’s ear, that each of the passages—whether in the voice of a Newfoundland fisherman or the narrator-as-poet—hums with its own energy.'
We'll be watching to see if he gets a response! To learn more about The Grey Islands go to the Brick Books website and to see other titles recommended to Stephen Harper (we also like #78 and #74) visit the website.
