I just returned from my annual visit to the OLA Super Conference – and every year I am amazed at the sheer number of energetic and enthusiastic librarians, library staffers, and students who flood the Toronto Metro Convention Centre and the surrounding hotels and coffee shops.
The publishing industry can sometimes feel so small, so inwardly focused, and so familiar in that we all seem to know each other – but to be part of a conference attended by more than 4,500 people interested in reading, literacy, and the delivery of information, is a quick way to remind one of the far-reaching impact we can have with our work.
Promoting Canadian independent publishing is one of our goals at this event – and we love being able to show off the fine works of our publishers, and to educate the library world about the resources available to them through the Literary Press Group.
Author signings are more popular than ever – with line-ups of excited and motivated readers looking to chat with Susan Statham (The Painter's Craft, Bayeux Arts), Jean Rae Baxter (Freedom Bound, Ronsdale Press), Lisa De Nikolits (West of Wawa, Inanna Publications) and Shari Lapena (Happiness Economics, Brindle & Glass).
We learned that the printed catalogue is still so important, and that the digital world is an ongoing challenge in all respects.
At the end of the day, the books are the important thing, and our Canadian publishers at the LPG still continue to deliver among the best in the country.
Thank you to everyone we met and chatted with – and we look forward to hearing from you!
Lisa
